Many years ago I read an article that has stuck with me – or at least the idea of it has stuck with me. I don’t remember the author, or where I read it. It was, I think, an article on time management. Here is my general memory of it.
Rather than talk about calendars and categories and segmenting, it talked about time as being much like a wave. Sometimes we are riding the wave and everything is going smoothly and we are getting things done. Other times we are fighting the undertow and no matter how hard we fight it, we are going to hit obstacles and slow downs and lose momentum, sometimes even going backwards. I wish I could remember who wrote it, because I’d like to tell him he was right about finding where and when the wave is going to be and take advantage of it. Sometimes that means changing your plans for what you wanted to accomplish.
My sister and I often call each other in the role of Productivity Police, to see if we’re really doing what we said we had planned to accomplish. Two hours ago I told her I had turned off my computer (I had) and was about to start my planned project.
Right now I’m supposed to be cleaning out the closet, but instead I’m watching Anthony Bourdain. Rather than let the undertow completely win though, I’m here posting to my blog. Then I’ll start picking up the Kitchen, and then next whatever item hits my fancy. The wave doesn’t seem to be building over at the closet cleaning, but maybe by puttering at the little things, I’ll be in position to catch that next big wave of motivation and momentum.
